About this tool

Audio format conversion is usually driven by a compatibility problem — a FLAC file that a phone player will not open, a WAV too large to share, an M4A that an old car stereo does not recognise. The right output format is whichever one the destination device or application accepts, balanced against the acceptable file size and quality.

When converting from any lossy format to any other, both codecs are applied to the same underlying audio. An MP3 at 128 kbps converted to OGG at 128 kbps will sound slightly worse than the original MP3, because the OGG encoder is working from an already-compressed signal. This is unavoidable. For that reason the default bitrate here is set slightly higher than the strict minimum — 192 kbps rather than 128 kbps — to leave headroom for the generation loss.

Questions

Which format should I choose?
MP3 for maximum device compatibility and moderate file size. WAV for lossless audio you intend to edit further. FLAC for lossless storage at about half the WAV size. M4A (AAC) for smaller files than MP3 at the same quality, particularly for Apple devices. Opus for the smallest files — around half the size of MP3 at equal quality — where the player supports it (all current browsers do).
Converting from a lossy format loses quality. How much?
Every decode-re-encode cycle on a lossy format (MP3, AAC, OGG) introduces some generation loss on top of the compression the source already applied. At high bitrates (256 kbps and above) the additional loss is usually inaudible. At 128 kbps it is perceptible on headphones. If audio quality matters, avoid lossy-to-lossy conversions — convert to WAV or FLAC for archival and re-encode from there.
Can I change the sample rate without affecting pitch?
Yes. Changing the sample rate resamples the audio — it recalculates the signal at the new sample frequency, which does not alter pitch. The result sounds identical at the new rate. Changing to a lower sample rate (22 050 Hz from 44 100 Hz) removes frequencies above the Nyquist limit of the new rate, which cuts off the top of the audible spectrum but is usually inaudible for speech.
