How to edit pdf metadata

  1. Open a PDF and see its current metadata fields.
  2. Edit any field to change it, or toggle "Strip all" to remove everything.
  3. Save the updated document.

About this tool

PDF metadata is the information about the document rather than in it. The author field often carries the name of whoever created the file on their computer. The producer field records which software built the PDF. Creation and modification dates are accurate to the second. None of this is visible while reading the document, but it is entirely visible to anyone who checks the document properties — and to automated systems that process the file.

Before sharing a document externally, it is worth looking at what metadata it carries. An internal draft shared with a client might carry an author name, internal file path, or previous revision history that was not intended to be disclosed. Stripping or correcting metadata here takes a moment and the document never leaves your browser while you do it.

Questions

What metadata is stored in a typical PDF?
At minimum: a creation date and a modification date. Usually also: the software that created it (producer/creator), and often the title and author from whatever application generated the file. Word and LibreOffice embed the author name from the OS user account. Scanners often embed model information. Sometimes: revision history embedded as XMP, which can carry past author names and edit dates.
Does this also handle XMP metadata?
Yes. PDFs carry metadata in two places: the traditional document information dictionary and an XMP stream embedded in the file. This tool reads and updates both, so stripping is thorough rather than only clearing the visible fields.
Why would I want to edit rather than just strip metadata?
Libraries, archives and document management systems use PDF metadata for classification and discovery. A document intended for publication benefits from accurate title and author fields. Editing rather than stripping lets you set correct values rather than leaving the file anonymous.
