Ebook Converter Known limits

Convert ebooks between EPUB, MOBI, AZW3, FB2 and TXT.

Worth knowing before you startDRM-protected ebooks purchased from Kindle, Kobo, or other stores cannot be converted — not by this tool, not by any tool that operates legally. Complex fixed-layout EPUBs (picture books, textbooks with heavy formatting) may reflow awkwardly in the output.

How to ebook converter

  1. Drop in an EPUB, MOBI, AZW3, FB2 or TXT file. The file must be DRM-free.
  2. Choose the output format. EPUB works on almost every reader; AZW3 is for sideloading onto Kindle.
  3. Convert and download.

About this tool

Ebook formats multiplied because reading hardware multiplied. EPUB is the open standard that Sony, Kobo, and most library lending systems use. MOBI and AZW3 are Amazon's formats for Kindle. FB2 is common in Russian-language reader software. TXT is the universal fallback when nothing else matters except the words.

Conversion between these formats is a solved problem for DRM-free files: they are all ultimately containers for HTML or structured markup with images attached. The metadata — author, title, cover, table of contents — maps across formats with reasonable fidelity. The place it falls down is complex fixed-layout EPUBs, where the formatting assumptions of one format do not translate cleanly into another.

Questions

Why can't it convert Kindle books I purchased?
Books bought from Kindle, Kobo, Apple Books and most major stores are encrypted with DRM (Digital Rights Management). The encryption is tied to the account that purchased the book. Removing it without authorisation is illegal under the DMCA and equivalent laws in other jurisdictions, so no legal conversion tool can do it. This is a legal constraint, not a technical one.
How do I know if my file has DRM?
DRM-free files usually come from Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, Smashwords, itch.io, or directly from authors and small publishers. Files bought from the major retail stores almost always have DRM. If you bought a file and it says "DRM-free" explicitly, it is convertible.
What is a fixed-layout EPUB?
Most ebooks are reflowable — text wraps to the screen size, and the reader can choose font size. Fixed-layout EPUBs are more like digital PDFs: each page is a precise composition with elements at exact coordinates. Picture books and highly designed textbooks use this format. Conversion to MOBI or AZW3 for these can scramble the layout because those formats were not designed for fixed positioning.
