About this tool

A graphic equalizer divides the audible spectrum into fixed frequency bands and lets you boost or cut each one independently. The ten bands here cover the full range from deep bass (32 Hz) to the top of hearing (16 kHz). Real audio problems have characteristic frequency signatures: boominess in the low-mid range, harshness in the upper-mid, sibilance in the high frequencies.

The presets are starting points, not final answers — every recording and every listening environment is different. The Podcast preset is calibrated for a typical USB microphone in a small room with some reflective surfaces. If your room is heavily treated or your microphone has a darker character, you may need more 2 kHz presence than the preset provides. Treat the presets as a diagnostic shortcut and adjust from there.

What does the Podcast EQ preset do?
It applies a high-pass filter around 80 Hz to remove low-end rumble from desk vibration and HVAC noise, a slight boost around 2–4 kHz where vocal intelligibility lives, and a gentle reduction around 300–500 Hz to reduce the boxy, room-resonant character that many USB microphones produce. The result is a voice that sounds cleaner and sits better in earphones.
How do I fix a recording that sounds boomy?
Reduce the 125 Hz and 250 Hz bands. Boominess in voice recordings typically comes from proximity effect (microphone placed too close) combined with room reflections in the low-mid range. Cutting those bands by 3–6 dB is usually enough to clear it without thinning the voice.
Can I apply EQ to a batch of podcast episodes?
Yes. Add multiple files, configure the EQ once, and every file gets the same treatment. This is useful for normalising recordings made in the same room on the same equipment — the acoustic character is consistent, so one EQ setting applies to all of them.
