How to trim audio

  1. Drop an audio file or a video file — the audio track is extracted automatically.
  2. Drag the waveform handles to set the in and out points, or click to place the playhead and type a timestamp.
  3. Toggle fades if you need the clip to ease in or out, then export.

About this tool

A waveform editor is the right tool for audio trimming because you can see where the signal is. Silence looks flat; speech and music show clear peaks. Placing an in-point just before the first transient of a word is something you can do by eye in a fraction of a second — typing a timestamp and hoping it lands right is slower and less accurate.

The ringtone use case is specific enough to mention directly. M4R is just a renamed M4A container, but iPhones enforce a 40-second cap and refuse to import files renamed manually from M4A. This tool generates proper M4R output at whatever duration the waveform cut gives you, which is what makes it work. The 40-second limit is enforced at export — if your clip is longer the export button will warn you before trying.

Fades matter more than people expect for short clips. A voice recording that starts at full volume with no fade-in often has a click at the very beginning — a fraction of a millisecond of silence before the audio engine reacts. A 50-millisecond fade-in eliminates this without being audible as a fade. Fade-out on speech prevents the abrupt silence that feels like a cut rather than an ending.

Questions

How do I make an iPhone ringtone?
Choose M4R as the output format. iPhones require ringtones to be under 40 seconds — the waveform editor shows the current clip length so you can trim to stay within that. Transfer the M4R file to your phone via Finder (macOS) or iTunes and set it in Settings › Sounds.
Can I cut a clip out of the middle of a track?
The trim tool cuts to a single contiguous range. To remove a section from the middle — delete a breath between phrases, silence a cough — use the join tool to bring in two copies of the file and trim each to the range you want to keep, then merge them.
Will trimming without re-encoding preserve quality?
For MP3 and AAC, stream copy is possible only on exact frame boundaries, which align with MP3 frames (roughly 26 ms for 44.1 kHz). The tool tries stream copy first and re-encodes the edge frames if the cut does not align. WAV and FLAC are PCM-based and can be cut at any sample boundary without re-encoding at all.
What does the fade do to the sound?
Fade in linearly ramps the gain from silence to full volume over the fade duration. Fade out does the reverse. Both avoid the sharp click that an abrupt start or end produces, which is particularly noticeable in headphones and on cut speech.
