About this tool

Audio volume problems come in two forms: the whole file is too quiet or too loud, or the level varies within the file. Manual gain handles the first case — you know the file is 6 dB too quiet, you add 6 dB. LUFS normalisation handles both cases when you do not know the target offset or need to match multiple files to a consistent standard for publication.

The limiter matters when boosting. Adding +12 dB of gain to a quiet recording will almost certainly push some peaks above digital full scale, producing hard clipping — a particularly unpleasant distortion that sounds like crackling. A true-peak limiter intercepts those peaks before they clip and attenuates them just enough, preserving the dynamics of the rest of the signal.

What is LUFS?
LUFS (Loudness Units relative to Full Scale) measures perceptual loudness — it accounts for the way human hearing is more sensitive to some frequencies than others, and for the duration of sounds. It is a better measure than peak level for assessing how loud audio sounds to a listener. Streaming platforms measure integrated LUFS over the whole track and use it to level-match content in their players.
What is the difference between LUFS normalisation and peak normalisation?
Peak normalisation finds the highest amplitude sample in the file and raises the gain until that sample reaches a target level (usually -1 dBFS). It maximises the signal without clipping. LUFS normalisation adjusts the gain so the integrated loudness hits the target, which produces consistent perceived volume across different tracks regardless of their peak levels. LUFS is more useful for matching content; peak is better when you want to use the full dynamic range of the medium.
Why is my quiet recording still quiet after normalising?
If the recording has significant background noise and only a short speech segment, the LUFS analyser averages loudness over the whole file including the quiet sections. The speech segment might be at a reasonable level but the average is dragged down by the noise floor. Use silence remover first to strip the quiet sections, then normalise the trimmed result.
